Anna Dagmar Johnson has a BM in Jazz Performance and Music Education from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. She has studied classical piano with Maguerite Samoorian, Vincent Lenti and Polly van der Linde. Her primary jazz piano teachers have included Wayne Reiss, Bevan Manson, Michael Cain and Harold Danko. She currently studies voice with Theo Bleckmann.
Her teaching experience includes faculty positions at the Eastman Community Education Division, Mamaroneck High School, and Westchester Music School. She has been a six-year faculty member and three-year choir director at the Summer Sonatina School of Piano and Sonata Program in Bennington, VT. In New York, Anna carries a full private piano studio, with regular piano performance "play dates" and an annual concert at Steinway Hall. Anna works with children age 5 and up as well as adults on both classical and jazz repertoire. Several of her current students also specialize in songwriting.
Anna's teaching philosophy is to help students develop as complete and versatile musicians. She encourages them to analyze, interpret, compose, improvise and sight-read. She also teaches methods for creating accompaniments, reading chord symbols and ear training. The younger students enjoy Anna's original musicianship games, which focus on rhythm, notation, and aural skills.
